Meta is making the case for a future in which highly advanced artificial intelligence is not concentrated inside governments, corporations or a handful of research labs, but instead becomes a widely available tool used by, well, everyone.

In a wide-ranging statement published Aug. 10, Meta outlined its philosophy for what it calls “personal superintelligence,” arguing that the next generation of AI should focus less on replacing people and more on expanding what individuals can create, learn and accomplish.

From AI Assistant to Personal Agent

Meta envisions AI agents considerably more capable than today’s chatbots. According to the company, a personal agent could eventually understand a user’s goals and preferences while continuously assisting with areas including work, finances, health, relationships, household management, and hobbies.

Those systems could operate across devices, including AI-powered glasses, while incorporating privacy and security protections for personal information, Meta said.

The company also expects AI to become increasingly important as a creative and scientific tool. Meta pointed to applications ranging from software development and content creation to drug discovery and personalized education. Rather than viewing automation as AI’s primary economic contribution, Meta argues that invention may prove more important.

“Invention, not automation, will be the greatest contribution of superintelligence,” the company said.

Meta Predicts More Entrepreneurship, Not Fewer Jobs

One of the biggest questions surrounding increasingly capable AI is what happens to employment.

Meta acknowledges the potential for job displacement but rejects the assumption that advanced AI necessarily leads to widespread unemployment. Instead, the company predicts that AI could enable individuals and small teams to launch businesses that previously required far more employees and capital.

That could mean smaller companies operating at greater scale, alongside entirely new categories of work. Meta suggested future occupations could include one-person product studios, AI-assisted experience designers and specialists developing highly personalized medical treatments.

The company said it expects personal AI systems to help workers adapt as occupations change by providing individualized education and training.

Broad Access Becomes Part of Meta’s Strategy

Central to Meta’s proposal is the idea that advanced AI should be distributed broadly rather than reserved for organizations with the most computing power.

Meta said it intends to provide free versions of its AI tools that could eventually reach billions of people, while customers requiring additional computing resources could pay for greater capacity.

That position also extends to Meta’s broader argument about AI safety. Instead of relying primarily on centralized control, the company says widely distributed AI systems could create checks and balances among individuals, companies, governments and competing AI developers.

Big Promises Come With Big Risks

Meta’s vision is notably optimistic, but the company also acknowledges significant risks involving cybersecurity, biological threats, surveillance, job disruption and the possibility of humans eventually losing control of increasingly autonomous AI systems.

Its proposed answer is a combination of stronger defenses, cooperation between frontier AI companies and governments, continued investment in infrastructure, and keeping advanced AI capabilities widely available.

Whether that model proves practical remains an open question. But Meta is clearly positioning the debate over AI’s future as something larger than a race to build the most intelligent model.
